Removal of Wachovia Sign from Birmingham Office Tower Taking Longer than Expected

Work to remove the Wachovia logo from a downtown Birmingham office tower is taking longer than expected, said Jay Lawrence, a spokesman with Wells Fargo & Co.

Workers will continue removing the old logo today and then place the new Wells Fargo sign on the building in the morning, he said.

Because the sign work is at the top of the 452-foot-tall office tower, a helicopter is being used to both remove the old sign and install the new one.

Lawrence said the same streets closed today will be closed again in the morning, starting about 7 a.m. They are: 19th Street North, from the alley at Third Avenue North to Fifth Avenue North; from Third Avenue North to Sixth Avenue North; Fourth Avenue North, from 19th Street North to Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard; Fifth Avenue North, from 19th Street North to 20th Street North.
