Happy birthday to Mickey Mouse. Today November 18, 2010 is the 82nd birthday of the famous cartoon character Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse is a cartoon character who has become an icon for the Walt Disney Company. Mickey Mouse was created in 1928 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks and voiced by Walt Disney. The Walt Disney Company celebrates his birth as November 18, 1928.
On November 18, 1928, Mickey made his official debut in Steamboat Willie at a premier in New York. The short film was Walt Disney’s first sound-synchronized animated cartoon.
The image of a mouse came to Walt Disney in early 1928, on his train journey back to Los Angeles when he was trying to approve more money for Oswal pictures. Walt Disney said, ” Mrs. Disney and I were coming back from New York on the train and I had to have something I could tell them. I’ve lost Oswald so, I had this mouse in the back of my head because a mouse is sort of a sympathetic character in spite of the fact that everybody’s frightened of a mouse including myself.”
Mickey Mouse’s original drawings used circles for his head, body and ears. 1939′s “The Pointer” saw a bold, new design for Mickey as his body became more pear-shaped and pupils were added to his eyes to increase his range of expression. Later on, animators of the 1940s would add a perspective aspect to his ears, giving them a three-dimensional effect. This change, however, was short-lived. The Mickey Mouse of today appears much as he did in the early days with the exception of a costume change here and there.
Mickey was voiced by Walt Disney (1928–1947), Jimmy MacDonald (1947–1977), Wayne Allwine (1977–2009) and now Wayne Allwine provides Mickey’s distinctive voice.
