Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus turns 18 today November 23. But creepy cyber criminals are celebrating early and using a well-worn but devious trick to scam her legions of Facebook fans.
Making their way around Facebook are messages claiming to show a scandalous video of Miley and her boyfriend. The messages are titled, “Watch Miley Cyrus With Her New Boyfriend! Wow She Went Too Far” and “Miley cyrus went too far with hot boyfriend. Wow! She is wild.”
According to this messages is a picture of that shows the teen sensation baring her midriff; the compromising photo was stolen from her Gmail account when she was 15, said researchers at the security firm Sophos.
But venturing into the sordid web of photos leads to an online survey that attempts to collect personal information and could grant the scammer access to users’ Facebook profiles.
Sophos suggests removing references from the scam from newsfeeds and using Facebook’s privacy settings to disable applications from accessing your profile.
This is not the first time Miley Cyrus and other teen stars have been the target of online scammer. In early November, a similar Facebook scam promised a photo of Cyrus that would make those who saw it “lose all respect” for her. And because of his immense popularity.
Fellow teen singing star Justin Bieber is often the subject of scam campaigns. Even squeaky clean Harry Potter can’t escape the tangled web of Web scams.
